RSS opposes ‘Govt’s move to control temples’

Kochi:The Kerala unit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has criticised the State Government’s attempts to “take over the control” of Hindu temples through the proposed Malabar Devaswom Bill. Talking to mediapersons here on Saturday, RSS State general secretary AR Mohan said it was high time that the governing bodies of the temples were liberated from the clutches of the Government and “corrupt politicians”.
The Sangh was not against the introduction of a uniform Devaswom code, but it should be drafted only in consultation with various Hindu organisations. “Such attempts will result in the temples ending up as another Government department. Hence the subject should be discussed at various levels before it is implemented,” he said.
To a question on the proposed Ordinance to reorganise Travancore and Kochi devaswom boards, he said that RSS considered reorganisation as a policy of the LDF and not as a mere statement made by Dewasom Minister G Sudhakaran.

Mohan said that the RSS would oppose the Malabar Dewasom Bill in its present form proposed by the government. “The temples are the properties of the believers. The right to govern them should rest with the Hindus,†he said.
He said the government should refrain from acquiring the properties of Hindu temples, Maths and asrams. He alleged that the government was trying to bring the temples under bureaucratic rule. “The Hindu organisations should have been consulted before drafting the Bill,†Mohan said.
A share of the revenue from the properties of the temples acquired by the government should be used for the well-being of the Hindu society.
“Many temples in Malabar had cultivatable lands and forest area under their ownership which had been confiscated by the government. The temple employees have every right over the revenue from such properties,†he said.
Mohan said that the revenue from the temples should be used for the welfare of the Hindus. “The revenue from the worshiping places of other religions are used for the welfare of the same community. In the case of Hindus, the situation is different,†Mohan said.
