AIMS launches new treatment for brain tumour

KOCHI: Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) has launched a new treatment, Stereo Tactic Radio Surgery, combining radiation therapy and stereo tactic neuro surgery.

The new method is to treat brain tumour and problems related to veins. The speciality of the surgery is that it can be done without shedding blood, said Dr T K Padmanabhan, professor and head of the radiation oncology department, at a press meet here on Wednesday.

This treatment is the first of its kind in Kerala. It helps to point the radiation at the affected area and only diffused radiation falls on the surrounding areas.

Patients undergoing the treatment can leave the hospital within hours after the surgery. The cost of the surgery will be about Rs 50,000. Dr Dileep Panicker, professor and head of neuro surgery, Dr K Bhaskaran Pillai, professor and head of medical physics department and Dr P Satheesh Prasad, associate professor, medical physics participated in the press meet.
