Rafeeq denied visit by outsiders: Kodiyeri IUML gets a respite

KOZHIKODE: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s hurried visit to the district jail has raised many eyebrows as it is suspected that his mission was to help the IUML which is restless after the revelations of a remand prisoner.

Kodiyeri was eager to state that Rafeeq Puthiyangadi, who is in the jail as an accused in the Marad case, had told him that no one from outside had come to the jail to dissuade him (Rafeeq) from pressing for a CBI probe.

Kodiyeri paid a visit to the jail on Sunday after Rafeeq revealed that some people from outside visited the jail after he and some other prisoners were about to demand a CBI probe. There were charges that it was an IUML leader who was instrumental in blocking the CBI probe.

But Kodiyeri told mediapersons that Rafeeq said that no outsiders had visited him in jail and the talk was among the prisoners themselves.

The Minister’s statement gave a point to the IUML to save its face.

Kodiyeri’s stand was contradicted by LDF-independent MLA P T A Raheem, who also visited the jail in the afternoon. Raheem said that Rafeeq had told him that it was the district office-bearers of the IUML who tried to persuade the prisoners not to demand a CBI probe. Rafeeq had written a letter to Raheem stating that he had been falsely implicated in the case.

Kodiyeri had a one-to-one talk with Rafeeq. But he did not reveal what transpired between the two. And the Minister stated that Rafeeq had denied the visit of outsiders.

Now the question remains:

Who is telling the truth- the Minister or the MLA?

Or did Rafeeq tell a lie to the Minister?

The focal point of the controversy after the letter came to light was the role played the IUML in sabotaging the CBI probe. But Kodiyeri’s visit has given a respite for the party.

If Kodiyeri wanted to verify the veracity of the letter he could have sent some police officer to the jail. There was no need for the Home Minister to go to the jail.

The developments have also punctured one of the claims of the UDF when it was in power.

The UDF leadership had said that the greatest achievement of its government was that it could arrest all the culprits within no time and therefore there is no need for a CBI investigation.

Now the IUML is saying that most of those in jail are innocent.
