BMS to set up centre for labour studies

KOCHI: Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has come out with a novel idea of training the labourers in the state on the lines of V V Giri National Labour Institute by setting up a Labour Study Centre in Kochi.

The Institute is being established to face the challenges confronting the contemporary world of work in the context of a globalising economy.

The BMS Labour Study Centre, to be set up in Kochi, will have the facilities for research activities. The research studies will be undertaken with the perspective of enhancing the theoretical understanding and providing inputs for necessary policy formulation.

BMS district treasurer Reghuraj said that work of the Rs 2-crore building is on and it is expected to be inaugurated on the founder’s day of BMS, July 23. This Institute will conduct classes for the labourers according to the change in scenario of trade unionism.

‘‘An Institute of this kind is being established for the first time in the state and this will cater to the needs of all trade unions in the state, irrespective of political affiliations. The primary aim is to organise the work force in the state and make them understand about the emerging global changes in the trade sector,’’ he said.

Renowned people from the trade union sector, Labour Department and NGOs will lead the classes for the labourers and the trade union leaders. The Institute will conduct separate courses for those in various sectors.

With the emergence of new trade sectors in the state, the labourers have lost the bargaining power.

There should be changes in labour policy according to the trend in the market and the labourers could be equipped for it through the classes at the Institute, Reghuraj said.

The Institute will focus on research activities like employment, with special emphasis on employment-generation strategies, labour mobility and wages. Studies will be made on the employment trends in terms of sectors, regions and industries in Kerala.
