KOCHI: The Department of Geriatric Medicine at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has initiated a health care checkup programme for people above 60 years.

It is called ‘geriatric package’ and it covers all essential investigations, consultations with specialist geriatrician, physiotherapist and nutritionist, along with lifestyle advice.

Geriatric medicine is a speciality which deals with the medical and social aspects of people above the age of 60. It is a very well-established medical speciality in the developed world, although it is relatively new to our country.

In view of the large number of senior citizens, the significance of geriatric medicine is self-evident.

The increase in life expectancy has its problems too as senior citizens are more vulnerable to illnesses and disabilities. Preventive health maintenance plays a significant role in this regard.
