Sobha group opens home for the aged
Bangalore-based Sobha group has started a home for the aged at Panniyankara, about 30 km from here, to provide a comfortable and secure environment for the old in the twilight of their lives.
The Sobha Hermitage has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore on 3.5 acre of a hilly land by PNC Menon, an NRI industrialist and chairman of the group.
Colonel VK Balan Menon, director of Sri Kurumbha Trust, who runs the home, said that in the present socio-economic scenario, overseas jobs often kept children and parents separated.
Some couples without children found no one to take care of them during their ‘dusk’, while some preferred to live separately from their children.
The Sobha Hermitage has been constructed with 50 furnished double rooms, five guestrooms, clinic with resident doctors, library, reading room, television room, cyber café and fully equipped health centre, he added.
The trust had formed a committee of eminent persons to select the deserving inmates. Out of the 50 rooms, 13 are exclusively reserved for deserving senior citizens and 12 for those who can afford paying a refundable deposit of Rs 7 lakh, including the monthly charges.
The home provides the other 25 rooms for widows from poor families and their children, who are not more than three years old.
The food served at the home is vegetarian and there is a ban on the use of alcoholic drinks and tobacco.
