Abhaya killed by a priest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : A priest and his accomplices had murdered Sister Abhaya, alleged a letter received by S Soman, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thiruvananthapuram. A website reported on Wednesday that the sender of the letter, which was addressed to the CJM, was an inmate of the hostel of the St Pius X Convent in Kottayam at the time of the murder of Sister Abhaya. The body of Abhaya was found in the well of the convent on March 27, 1992.

The sender did not want to reveal the name of the person for fear of life considering the seriousness of the case, the report said. The letter has been handed over to RM Krishna, SP of the CBI, who is heading the new team of the agency that is probing the case.

The letter alleged that the perpetrators of the crime were a priest, the son of an industrialist in Kottayam and the hostel warden at that time. It states that Sr Abhaya was murdered by the priest and his companions after she had witnessed the immoral activities of the priest by chance. The report says that the matter was known to all inmates of the convent hostel

According to the report, the letter, posted on June 1, says that the local police and the Crime Branch, which first probed the case, were deliberately trying to establish that Abhaya had committed suicide. The letter also reveals that the sender belongs to Kottayam.

The local police who first probed the death concluded that Sr Abhaya had committed suicide. After this the Crime Branch of Kerala Police and the CBI investigated the case. The CBI, which found that the nun was murdered, however, concluded the probe citing lack of evidence. But the Kerala High Court ordered reinvestigation of the case.

Meanwhile, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court has deferred the hearing of the case relating to tampering with the work report of the chemical analysis of Abhaya’s body parts to July 27. Chief chemical analyst at the chemical laboratory R Geetha and analyst of the laboratory M Chithra had been present at the court.

The case is that Geetha and Chithra had deliberately corrected the entries in the result sheet of the work report.
