T’PURAM: Are the efforts of the State Government to control self-financing professional colleges of any use? ‘‘No’’ would be the answer. The reason is simple.

Almost 75 percent of the professional colleges are run by members of the minority community and most of them have either received minority status or have moved the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions for getting it.

With the NCMEI granting minority status to MES Medical College, Perinthalmanna, six of the ten private self-financing medical colleges have minority status. The other medical colleges with minority status are Amala Medical College, Thrissur; Jubilee Medical College, Thrissur; Dr Sommerwell Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakonam; Malankara Orthodox Syrian Christian Medical College, Kolenchery; and Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Thiruvalla.

The applications of two other medical colleges, Kannur Medical College and Karuna Medical College, Palakkad, are before the NCMEI. The State Government has no control over the Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, as the college has deemed university status. College’s government can control: SUT Medical College, T’Puram, and the Sree Gokulam Medical College, Venjaramoodu. (Make no mistake both are owned by Hindus!)
