In a surprise development, Congress general secretary in Kerala K Sudhakaran today joined hands with BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy to launch a blistering attack on the CPI(M).

Addressing the public meeting organised by pro-BJP Bharatiya Vijnana Kendra, Sudhakaran said he was not afraid of sharing a common platform with any political party to oppose the CPI(M), which is heading the LDF government in Kerala.

Charging the Left party with curtailing freedom of expression and suppressing voice of dissent with brute force, he stressed the need to stand up to the “emerging challenge”.

“Despite the country getting freedom 60 years back, some CPI(M) strongholds in Kannur are reeling under dictates of local party leadership,” he said.

Sudhakaran, the local MLA, also accused Left party of using official machinery to subvert democratic process in the politically sensitive district where clashes between political parties were common.

Rudy, the BJP national secretary, described CPI(M) as a “party having double face, duel stands and host of contradictions on issues of national significance”.

Time was ripe for the Congress-led UPA government not to depend upon the CPI(M)’s outside support to remain in power as the Left party was often “insulting” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and “sabotaging” his efforts, Rudy said.

He said CPI(M), which tries hard to implement labour reforms and talks high about disinvestment and foreign direct investment in the states it ruled, was contradicting the same in Delhi, thereby scuttling efforts of UPA government.

The Left parties were “enjoying power” at the Centre without having any accountability and take credit for all the good things and passing the buck on the UPA government for blaming it for initiating “anti-people” measures, he alleged.

The party’s “brutal and veiled face” in West Bengal got exposed with the Nandigram attrocities to grab land of poor farmers in the name of industrialisation, Rudy said.

Citing the recent death of a policeman during a campus clash involving pro-Left SFI and pro-BJP ABVP students in Changanassery near Kottayam, the former Civil Aviation Minister said the situation in Kerala looked more or less similar to that of West Bengal even though both states are far off geographically.

Among those who spoke at the public meeting here tonight included BJP state president P K Krishnadas and RSS local leader Valsan Thillankeri.
