The CPI(M) will be conducting peace marches in the district from March 23 to March 27, said party Kannur district secretary P Sasi.

The statement of the CPI(M) district secretary is taken with contempt by the people of Kannur district as there is a general feeling that it was CPI(M) which was directly instrumental in the present violence in the district.

The recent violence in which seven people lost their lives and several people were injured had all the blessings of the CPI(M) district leadership and there is a general feeling among the people of the district that the party and its leadership has gone overboard several times in the recent political violence, especially in the Thalassery area.

The recent violence started when the local leader of the RSS MP Sumesh was attacked by a group of CPI(M) activists at around 2.45 pm on March 5 in Thalassery town when he had just come out of a hotel after having his lunch. Sumesh received several injuries allover his body and is still battling for his life in Kozhikode Medical College. His left palm was severed during the attack.

The people of the area vouch that the local leaders of the CPI(M) were not present in Thalassery and the neighbouring areas for the last few days and this was a clear signal that all was not well in the town or that the party was preparing for a showdown.

There was immediate retaliation on the part of the RSS and a CPI(M) worker and autorikshaw driver Ranjith was hacked to death. This was expected and the CPI(M) cadre went on a killing spree spitting venom in an area of around 25 km killing several persons and maiming many others.

The immediate attacks carried out by the CPI(M) in different parts of the district within hours was a clear indication that the ruling party was bent on annihilating its political opponents with precision.

The local people pooh poohed the claims that the CPI(M) was going for a peace initiative and a peace march in the district. Karthiyani Amma, whose son was hacked to death by the CPI(M) goons told The Pioneer, “There is nothing which the CPI(M) can do to prevent this. The party has a set of goonda leaders and their speeches are adding fire to fuel and in the recent attacks and killings the inspiration was the hard hitting and venom spitting speech of CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan at Thalassery.”

Another point raised by the people of the town is the failure of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who is the local MLA, in containing violence in his hometown.

There are reports that it was the CPI(M) leaders in the area who had prevented Kodiyeri from returning to Thalassery area from Delhi where he was attending the party central committee meeting.
