Cops sitting on terror link cases

MALAPPURAM: The delay in exposing the role of Nalakath Yusuf, who was booked by the police on Tuesday in connection with the Kozhikode twin blasts in 2006, is yet again pointing a finger at the lackadaisical approach of the cops in investigating terror-related cases.

Even after unearthing four pipe bombs from a residential area of one Nalakath Basheer, near the house of Yusuf at Chettipadi near Parappanangadi on January 7, the investigators had found nothing conspicuous about the incident.

During the process of probe, police had stated that the bombs were highly potent.

However, no later initiative was taken to launch a fresh inquiry to net the guilty.

Even after 11 months, the chemical analysis report of the materials used in the explosives is yet to be released by the Forensic Science Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.

According to sources, no comparative study was held using the unearthed particles of the bomb to check possible links in similar instances reported from various parts of the state.

It is learnt that the Police have stocked only a few particles of the defused explosive for future inquiry.

The most surprising fact is that the police had interrogated Basheer and Yusuf, an approver, who was earlier an accused in the Kalamassery bus burning case, during the initial stage of inquiry. However, it had then failed to gain any breakthrough in proceeding with the inquiry.

According to the police, the main suspect in the case was one Umer Farook, who had been absconding after the death of Abdul Rahim, a link in the terror network in the Jammu and Kashmir encounter. Police had then stated that Umer would also be capable of giving more clues on those behind the Kalamassery bus burning incident
