Kollam Mayor has done nothing wrong : Kakkanadan

Kollam: According to prominent personalities from different walks of life, it is inappropriate and tantamount to denigrating the Mayor post to create a controversy out of Mayor Padmalochanan’s inauguration of RSS Pranthasanghik organising committee office by lighting the traditional lamp.

Noted literary personality Kakkanadan reacted: “The Mayor has the responsibility to see all parties equally and not to oblige to any single side. That being the case, the Mayor should be able to play a lead role in various socio-political events held in the city”. He added that the Mayor’s involvement in the RSS function needs to be viewed from above perspective and he cannot be blamed for his views on this issue.

P. Kesavan Nair, a former CPI(M) leader, thinker and writer opined that as Mayor, Padmalochanan’s actions are wholly right and they should not be viewed through the prism of parochial politics. Similar views were echoed by SNDP Yogam councillor, Prof. G.Sathyan. He further said that in fact the Mayor should be congratulated for inaugurating the organizing committee office of a function at Kollam that would be attended by over 1.5 lakh people. “This is not a matter of ideology. At a time when policy changes are made by even China for national development, it is shameful to have such parochial attitudes even in such non-ideological issues,” Satyan further noted.

Kerala Dalit Federation state president, P. Ramabhadran, said that it was only discharge of official duty on the part of the Mayor to have inaugurated the RSS organizing committee office in Kollam. According to Ramabhadran, “the Mayor did not surrender his political beliefs. Neither did he say that he is an RSS fuctionary, nor did he express solidarity for the RSS. It is not because of any faith that the communist leaders attend inauguration of churches, on the contrary it is purely to respect the sentiments of vast sections of people. Considering such things, it would be inappropriate to exploit the Mayor’s action on religious or social grounds.” “It could be termed inappropriate if CPI(M) district secretary K. Rajagopal or DCC president Kadavoor Sivadasan were to attend such a function,” he further added.

Even as such controversies are raging, Mayor Padmalochanan is adamant that he has only discharged his official duties. He is maintaining a stoic silence on the firm belief that he has done nothing particularly wrong.
