Dim-witted justifications to support conversion

via H.Balakrishnan published on November 24, 2006

The Pseudosecular intelligentsia who supports Christian conversions had always put forward some dim-witted justifications to defend this unethical practice.

In that one is “A member of a notified ST ‘is permitted to profess any religion and enjoy the benefits available for his Hindu/ST Compatriots”

In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on March 8,2006,held
Tribal converts to Christianity are not fit to head the community.“The ground for exclusion of Christians is not solely on the ground of religion, but on account of the admitted fact that a Christian cannot perform the religious functions attached to the office of Dolloi,” ruled Justice B.P. Singh. This case pertained to Khasi Tribe of Meghalaya. It is now the ‘law of the land’!!

Another claim is that ,‘conversion is a free and personal act of an individual and is not forced. It is impossible to influence anybody to change his religious faith by  giving any kind of assurance or sops’.

The Justice Niyogi Commisssion had concluded in 1954 that allurements formed an important component of Christian Evangelism.

That it has remained so todate is authenticated by the well known journalist Mark Tully in his book-‘No Fullstops in India’-“The bulk of their converts came from the untouchable community and the tribes. One Roman Catholic friend of mine still refers to Harijan converts as POWDER MILK CHRISTIANS, and there is NO DOUBT that these people-the poorest of the poor were attracted by the missionaries’ promises to feed their bodies, rather than the prospect of spiritual nourishment”.

Also, the TNIE of January 10,1999 had reported: “the annual budget of the Federation of Evangelical Churches of India earmarked Rs.2.6 lakh specifically for conversion of 700 people.Similarly,Friends of Missionaries Prayer Band annual budget showed that Rs.1.45 crore had been spent on conversion of 3,4000 people”.

The point is does change of religion by one’s free will entail such expenditures? Wonder who is ‘ignorant’?
